Urban poor initiative has been started by CmF after analyzing that
predominantly, the focus of community-based microFinance has been rural
poor only. Under this project, cash flow studies on households in urban
slums were conducted in five districts i.e. Jaipur, Jodhpur, Kota, Udaipur
and Bikaner. The studies revealed that urban poverty is a complex issue
characterized by low savings, lack of formal credit facilities,
vulnerability to risk and other social fragmentations. Since most of the
people are employed in the informal sector, their exposure to risks
regarding life and employment is too high. Keeping these points in mind,
urban poor livelihood initiative has been proposed to start in the
Jagatpura slum of Jaipur. The goal of the programme is to mitigate poverty
through generation of livelihood opportunities and increased access to
financial services.
The objectives of the initiative are:
 |
To create livelihood opportunities through provision of livelihood
support services
|
 |
To increase benefits from existing entitlements
|
 |
To facilitate community based institution building
|
 |
To increase access to microFinance services like savings, credit ,
insurance and remittances |
The strategy is to form strong community based institutions (of poor),
impart vocational training, to strengthen their linkages with markets and
financial institutions for savings and working capital.
